My Little Multilinguist

I knew the day was coming where Merrick would be smarter than me, but I have to admit I didn't expect it to happen as early as 2 1/2. Well, to give me a little more credit let's make it 2 3/4.

At his new school, they teach the kids Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. Merrick is like a sponge, as all kids are at this age, and just loves learning. Check him out in action below -- showoff! :)

PS - completely unrelated, but literally while I'm typing Merrick is in bed singing himself to sleep. Is it a bad thing when your son is singing Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi" to lull himself to bed? Hmm...I promise you I didn't teach him this one!

Anyway, video below --

Christmas in February

Since I'm so far behind in my blogs, we will have a bit of 'Christmas in February' for the next few posts so I can catch up on everything!

For Merrick's first Christmas, I decided that one of the traditions we would do is take a picture of him every year putting the topper on our Christmas tree. I can't believe we've spent 3 Christmases with him already - where has the time gone?

Below are pictures of him putting the topper on the tree for each year -- you will notice that this last year he's easily reaching the top of the tree from the floor. That's because our 2 1/2 year old is now 6' tall. Okay, okay -- we got a super, ridiculously small tree this year. But given everything that was on our plate in December (we were so busy that we didn't even send cards this year -- we've never not sent cards!), we decided a small tree was the way to go.

Back in Full Effect

Betcha you were just getting ready to give up on our happy little blog, weren't you? :)

Wow, the last 3-ish months have been a complete whirlwind. December was complete madness, what with the move across the country, my new job responsibilities, and the holidays. Then of course we were in CA for no more than 3 weeks before we were back in FL and CO for the holidays. January brought along time to finally unpack our boxes, get Merrick into a new school, and get into somewhat of a routine. And here we are in February.

So, as I sit here on a Wednesday evening at 10:30PM - knowing I have to get up at 4:30AM tomorrow morning to get a run in before my busy day begins - I figured, what better time to update a blog I haven't touched in 3 months than now. Let's see, so much time has passed I don't even know where to start!

Why don't I start with the weekend we moved out here and a couple cute Merrick stories around our hotel stay. When we made the big move, Merrick and I flew out here while Craig drove with Dexter. When Merrick and I got out here we had 4 days of quality time while waiting for Craig to get here. Merrick did AMAZING on the flight - he truly is my little travel buddy...oh the places we will go!

I had some remaining hotel points from my road warrior days (so glad those are over by the way), so I booked us a room at the Hilton in Burlingame, just a few miles away from San Francisco Airport, to stay until Craig arrived and we could move into our new house. We were so tired by the time we got in and I lugged all our stuff to the hotel, I thought room service was a MUST. We hadn't done that with him before. Then the next morning I was feeling especially lazy, so room service came to the rescue again. My little man thought pancakes on demand was a pretty cool concept. So after those 2 meals, every time I would ask him what he wanted for breakfast/lunch/dinner, he would loudly proclaim "I want room service!!" Took a while for that to get out of his system.

Outside of the room service, he apparently was not a big fan of the Hilton and made it known to me several times. You see, when we all came out here for our scouting trip, we stayed in a hotel that is the 'preferred' hotel of my company. This place is not nearly as nice as the Hilton, and there's a small airport literally right outside the hotel that can be quite noisy. So while most people would be hating this, Merrick absolutely loved the fact that he could be right next to the small airport.
Anyway, when the 2 of us were out here I took him out one evening to an activity center in San Jose. As we were heading back north to the Hilton we passed the exit for the hotel we stayed in during our scout trip. I have NO IDEA how he knew this...I said NOTHING to give him this indication. But all of the sudden he starts throwing a fit because "I want to stay at the 'nother one hotel! It's right there Mama! Mama!!" To give you some context, there are probably 20+ exits between where we were in San Jose and the Hilton. How on earth, after only being out here a week and then not back again for another 2 weeks - and to add to that the fact that he'd never been here before in his life, did he know where the exit to our old hotel was?? Apparently he has a knack for direction - which is good because I actually needed him to help me figure out where we had parked one morning when leaving the hotel. And he did help me. Yikes.
Below are a couple pictures of our travel day together during the big move...in the airplane getting ready for take off, and getting ready to load all our luggage into the rental car once we arrived.
