Happy Hollow

Thanks to some friends here in the Bay Area giving me the inside scoop, we found a really great little amusement park in San Jose called Happy Hollow. It's perfect for those weekend days where you just want to get out for a few hours and not have to dedicate your entire day. It's small - there are a handful of rides, a petting zoo, and different structures scattered throughout the park to play on. Merrick had a blast there. The cool thing is that Merrick is *just* tall enough to get onto every single ride.

The 3rd picture down is on this Frogger ride - the kind of ride that lifts you up in the sky and then quickly drops to the ground. Kid appropriate of course. We stood in line for this ride and I saw that parents were getting on, so I thought...okay no problem, I'll ride right next to him so he doesn't get scared - since it is something he's never done before. Well I started to sit next to him and apparently the rule is there is only 1 adult allowed on the ride, and this adult has to sit in the middle. That seat was taken. Merrick really wanted to go so I thought it would be okay. You'll notice that he's so tiny his head barely hits above the safety bar!

I stood right there and watched him -- he had a look on his face of uncertainty the entire time, but didn't panic or anything. The ride stopped and the operator lifted the safety bar, and I went in to grab him. He started crying, and I felt like the worst mom in the world, until I discovered the reason he was crying is because he didn't want to get off! He had to ride that about 3 more times.

Rock Out!

Merrick has been really interested in his little guitar lately, which of course has made Craig one very happy Daddy. Below is a Merrick original -- and you also get to enjoy a brief interlude where the accusations fly about Mommy's wherabouts. Does he know how to lay on a guilt trip or what?

Heartbreaks and Heartwarming

I think the older Merrick gets, the more I'm realizing that there's so much out there he is vulnerable to. I constantly worried about every little bump and bruise he would get when he was a baby (and of course I still do). We would go through such great lengths to keep him safe and protect him.

But for some reason my mind hadn't yet wrapped itself around the other hurts there are in this world. It's becoming clear to me that the hurts caused by others - someone hurting his feelings, crushes and heartbreaks down the road, etc --- those I think are far more painful to a parent than any bumps, bruises or cuts combined. I dread that Merrick will have to experience these things, and that Craig and I will hurt right along with him. At the same time though, the experience of having your child treat others with kindness, do the right thing in a tough situation, etc...perhaps all those heartwarming things help lessen the heartbreaks just a little bit.

Our first heartbreak - where Merrick's feelings were hurt by another- I experienced at the park near our house a couple months ago. He's at this age now where sometimes he doesn't want me to be in the mix while he's playing...he wants his independence and so I stand back and let him do his thing for a while. Well, he was playing and saw this group of older kids involved in a game of hide and seek. These kids were little too, probably no more than 5-7, but far older than Merrick at 2 yrs. Merrick decided he wanted to play with them, so he did. He ran right alongside them and was hiding with them. It was funny because the kids had no clue he was playing with them, and Merrick had no clue they didn't know he was playing with them.

Finally he was helping to find some of the kids, and was yelling "Boo!" when he found them. One of the kids ran out of his hiding spot and yelled at Merrick -- "Why are you saying that, go away!!" I saw and heard the whole thing. Merrick's face had a look of shock, and his lower lip started to tremble followed by him bursting into tears. It broke my heart into a million pieces. I may sound a bit dramatic but I kid you not, it did.

I wanted to scoop him up and yell right back at the kid. I did scoop him up -- but I stopped short of yelling at the kid. After all, he's just a little kid himself. His Mom handled it very well and had the boy come right back to apologize to Merrick. I would bet that Merrick has completely forgotten about the whole thing. But I don't know that I ever will. Wow, I SOOOOO need to toughen up.

Now for the heartwarming. I realize that the heartwarming can happen when other kids treat Merrick so nicely. All his friends at school are so sweet and like to give him hugs and kisses. Everytime I see one of his friends so excited to see Merrick, it melts my heart.

It's also the best feeling in the world to hear your child did something nice for someone else. The other day his teacher told me a story about how there was a new boy in his class. It was this boy's first day, and when it came to rest time he started crying because it was the first time he'd ever been there. The teacher told me that Merrick placed his mat right next to the new boy's mat, laid down and took the boy's hand. He held his hand until the boy went to sleep, then Merrick went to sleep himself. I wanted to cry at how sweet this was.

I think as a parent there will be the times that you have to hear about someone hurting your child's feelings or your child hurting someone elses feelings. But to watch your child become his or her own person and see them do the good things, unprompted, that is just the best feeling ever.

Merrick's 3rd Birthday

I really can't believe my little man is 3. We celebrated his birthday at Grammie and Grandpa's house in Florida. It was somewhat of a last minute trip - originally Grammie and Grandpa were planning to come out to CA to celebrate, but Merrick's Great Grandpa wasn't feeling that well, so we decided to head out there for some extra special time with him. We also got lots of quality time with Merrick's cousins Willow and Wren, Aunt Teri, Uncle David and Rita.

Thank you SO much Grammie and Grandpa for all the last minute scrambling to put together a birthday party that he absolutely loved to pieces. Of course Grammie orchestrated a party that you would think took months to plan in just a matter of days, as only Grammie can do. It was VERY hard to leave.

A little slideshow below to show the highlights of our long weekend - and oh ya, Papa Roy - the slideshow is to your favorite song! :)

Sweet Victory

Well, I can officially say I finished my first marathon. Last weekend was amazing and incredible on so many levels!

First, however, I must sidetrack for something I'm really, really excited about. We picked up my sister Heidi and her 'boyfriend' Ari at SFO airport on Friday afternoon (Heidi flew in to run the marathon with me). We had a great night catching up, and then on Saturday morning I noticed this flash of light coming off her finger. I did a double take, then a triple take, and realized...hmmm...this flash of light is on her ring finger. The ring finger of her left hand....could it be?? No, it couldn't -- could it?? So out comes my question -- "Heidi, what's that ring on your left hand all about??"

Then out it comes...Ari had planned to propose to her after the marathon in Big Sur, but he couldn't wait any longer and ended up proposing to her the morning they left to fly out to CA. I am so unbelievably excited about this!! Ari is everything I could have wanted for my little sister and then some, and I am so glad to have him as a part of the family. The reality is that he already has been. So congratulations you two, I have to admit this is still so surreal for me! Below is the fantabulous couple - picture taken on the Golden Gate Bridge:

And now to less important things but still part of my incredible weekend, the marathon. I picked up my girlfriend Dawn from the airport on Saturday, and the 3 of us girls had a leisurely lunch before heading down to Monterey. Ari, Craig and Merrick had already headed down there. We checked into the hotel, picked up our racing packets and strolled around town before grabbing a nice carb-filled dinner.

We had to wake up at 3:30a.m. the next morning in order to catch our bus that drove us to the start line for the marathon. For this Big Sur marathon, they actually shut down Highway 1 (highway that runs along the coast) for the duration of the marathon, so the only way for us to get to the start line was by bus. Nerves and excitement were running HIGH! I think I'll let the slideshow below do the rest of the talking...
